‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Passenger Trains connected to the SMJ

Following on from the previous discussion about WD passenger trains on the SMJ during the 1940s; it must be said that passenger trains ran on metals connected to the SMJ until the mid 1960s. There was a passenger service from the nearest point to…Continue

Wartime passenger trains from Burton Dassett 3 Replies

Arthur Jordan in his book, The Stratford Upon Avon and Midland Junction Railway - The Shakespeare Route at pp 82 mentions a WW2 late night special from Stratford on Avon to Burton Dassett for soldiers at the CAD. I would envisage that this did not…Continue

I don't mind being unofficial.

Adrian
I certainly don't see any harm in this as long as it remains "unofficial". If it becomes official then it will require a Constitution, Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer etc, etc, and that always means hassle in my experience! The beauty of this site is that it requires the minimum of hassle to enjoy it. Of course, if a group of like-minded individuals decided to get together and form an official society, then good luck to them, but I would not pretend that it would be an easy task; not least deciding upon and collecting subscriptions!

In another life I am the Chairman of the Friends of the Canal Museum at Stoke Bruerne, and I am sure the Council of that organisation would welcome some sort of link with those interested in the SMJ. After all we nearly had a branch to "Stoke Bruerne Wharf" in 1878.

David
David. If you can think of any connection you/we can make between the canals and the SMJ, we'd love to help. I love unofficial by the way - thanks guys!

I've always been unofficial, so what's likely to change????

Steve
Good point Steve! First may I say it's good to hear from you, I think I might have been slightly saying it with tongue planted firmly in my cheek. "Can we officially be the unofficial SMJ Society!"

Hope you are well

'The Unofficial SMJ Society' sounds vaguely familiar! I like it as a subheading but please don't change the website name (again!).

Dick
I'm not going to Dick - good point!

Unofficial works for me! I've been on all sorts of committees in my time and we really don't want to go there

Barry
Barry That's what I thought! No committees no secretaries, no meetings - unofficial!!
