‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Locomotive nameplates
Hi,
I'm working on a 5" gauge model of SMJ 16. I'd like to make some nameplates for this loco and I need some details to make these as realistic as possible.
Did any SMJ locos ever have nameplates ? If so does anybody have any pictures or details of these ? My current plan is to fit the plates to the sides of the smokebox. Any details about the size of these plates and the font used would be appreciated.

Just checked all the photo's of No 16 in various publications etc. None of the Beyer 0-6-0 or 2-4-0 SMJ or E&WJR Locomotives carried names. I cannot see where the Beyer Peacock plates on 16 were fitted either so I presume that they were fitted to the rear of the tender.

On my model loco the oval Beyer Peacock plates are on the frames below the running boards immediately above the middle axlebox horn on both the engine and the tender.
On the only picture I have of No 16, it looks like there is an oval plate above the middle axle horn on the engine. It's faint and blurry so I'm not sure it's a plate.
