‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Hans Von Kramer, an electrical engineer of Birmingham, first showed that a message could be sent from a moving SMJR train in April 1911. Miss Made Corelli gave an inaugural ceremony from a moving train on the 9 mile section between Stratford and Kineton. Later modifications included the remote application of the brakes to avoid potential collisions. However the Great War and the fact that the inventor was German put paid to future experiments.
This system was the forerunner to the Automatic Train Control used today.
