‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Fenny Compton is where the G.W.R. London to Birmingham line was crossed by the Stratford upon Avon and Midland Junction Railway. The G.W.R. line is to the left in front of the signal box; on the right is the S.M.J. station where the L.C.G.B. Thames, Avon and Severn Rail Tour has paused for a photostop. 12th October, 1963.
This is just one of the pictures I took of this train at various locations on the SMJ. John Cosford has contributed a few as well.
