‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

GAYTON BRIDGES 4 - 5 C.1885

Old map c.1885 showing tramway from the north to the area of the chute next to the siding between bridges 5 & 4. Near to Gayton Wilds, note the tramway in use at the time on the opposite side of the railway. This would have used bridge 2 to gain access to the standard gauge railway that ran parallel with the SMJR to the link with the L.N.W.R. near Blisworth.
