‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

There's an interesting illustrated article about this great little layout in this month's Rail Express. I'm impressed with the photos showing the detail of the layout (including a green United Counties bus approaching the bridge, not seen in this picture). It strikes me that if ever John or George tired of the 70's diesel theme it would be realtively easy for them to convert it to a 50's or 60's steam scene.
