‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

LAND USE AROUND GAYTON 1925

Red areas are current (1925)industrial use, yellow areas are moorland / rough pasture, purple areas are domestic use, brown is arable and green is woodland. Note bridge 2 is still in use as the link to the only ironstone working in the area at this time. Was the ironstone being calcined in the kilns marked further down the line from the transhipment point? Note bridge 1A is distinctly marked, over the line to the ex. L.N.W.R. link north of Blisworth Station.
