‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

SMJ BEYER PEACOCK IMAGES - UNPUBLISHED?

Dear All,

Following a hunch that the Beyer Peacock record would be retained at the Museum of Science and Industy in Manchester, I found the following images. I am afraid I cannot show pics owing to copyright.

OK That is all the photo's - you know how it is once you start you cannot stop. The Beyer Peacock order books still exist and the company directors minute books too.

What a wonderful find - great stuff - there are lots of lovely old locos there !
For the real SMJ / EWJR loco anoraks (like me !) who search after the really obscure there are a few others worth looking at - the links below will show-
Front view of the Hull & Barnsley 2-4-0 that No.13 was based on - unusual to get such a detailed shot
Ditto - but view of the cab interior - again unusual detail
Crewe Iron Co 0-6-0ST of 1867 - the EWJR loco No. 1 for the broom line in 1879 was based on this BP order, so can be taken to be an example of what the loco first looked like
Swedish 0-6-0 BP order of 1866
Swedish 2-4-0 tank BP order of 1866 - these last two were the basis of the two classes ordered by the EWJR to start their own services off - but either never delivered or returned to the makers after a very short use by EWJR - and then sold on to the LYR
