‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Northamptonshire South & West (BR Past & Present)

I wondered if anyone has seen this book yet and can tell me whether or not it has any new photos of the SMJ and if it's any good generally on Northants railways as I find this series varies a lot in consistency.

Hi Dick,

I got this book for Christmas, I think I've got or seen all the old SMJ photos. There's one of Towcester from 1964 with a huge pile of concrete channelling stored on the island platform that I'm not familiar with.

I've seen a lot of the photos of other lines as well - so probably not worth the twenty quid, look out for a second hand copy on e-bay for a fiver.
