‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Bridge under the M1 Motorway
The line closed temporarily in 1958 to allow construction of the M1 and this substantial bridge was built. However, the writing was already on the wall. Formal closure did not come until June 30 1958 and a few trains ran in early 1958. By the time the M1 opened in November 1959, the bridge had become a waste of money. April 29 1966, looking east.
