‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

SMJ photos

44xxx derailed at Stratford SMJ turntable

Oops! A 4F has come to grief while leaving the turntable at the Stratford-upon-Avon and Midland Junction (later LMS) engine shed at Stratford Old Town during 1959. What appears to be a Hawksworth pannier tank came to the rescue with its breakdown train while I was photographing it. The shed had closed on 22 July 1957 and the main buildings were quickly demolished but the yard and turntable were used for a short time afterwards. The water tower seen in front of the locomotive was retained while the SMJ was was used for iron ore trains from Oxfordshire to South Wales.
