‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

One of my earliest railway memories was being taken as a very small child to Castle Station to meet some cousins who had travelled up from Cornwall and were arriving via the 'Blizzy Lizzie'. They were used to seeing relatively modern looking Collett 4575 class tanks on their local line and pointed out that they had just travelled from Blisworth ''behind 'The Rocket' or something nearly as old''. I was struck by the Webb tank's tall chimney and by the fact that its number was nearly all sixes, no. 46666. It's one of this class that can be seen in the various pictures of the 'double motor' train at Towcester elsewhere on this website. By the time I was old enough to go spotting these veterans had been replaced by the Ivatt 2MT tank twins, 41218 & 41219.
