‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY COMPANY AND STRATFORD-UPON-AVON & MIDLAND JUNCTION: 6 June 1911 env. (slight soiling but neat) with bold double-line boxed "G.C.R./BRACKLEY/CANCELLED" hs, taken to London by train & posted with "LONDON N.W. 11.15AM" hs, and further "12:40PM/JU 6/11" cds on reverse; and 1924 env. to Huddersfield franked 1910 2d Stratford-upon-Avon & Midland Junction Railway dull red on matte surfaced paper (control 6634) cancelled by ms X and endorsed "To be posted on arrival", put in the mail at Blakesley with "BLAKESLEY/26 NO/24" hs applied - a v. attractive rare cover.
