‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

1951/07/02 Wappenham lies to the south-west of Towcester in Northamptonshire and once had a station on the Stratford upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway. (S.M.J.) This was on the line from Towcester to Cockley Brake Junction on the L.N.W.R. Banbury (Merton Street) to Buckingham and Verney Junction line. This is the last passenger train to run on the line through Wappenham which puts the date at the 2nd July, 1951. Photograph kindly provided by John Mudd from his collection - photographer unknown.
