‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Six Counties Railtour at Kineton from new book
Late snow is still lying on Sunday 7 March 1965 as two ex Southern Railway locomotives, Richard Maunsell designed U class 2-6-0 31639 leading Oliver Bulleid Q1 class 0-6-0 33006, running along the Stratford upon Avon and Midland Junction line on the Home Counties Railway Society “Six Counties Railtour” are seen from the B4451 Kineton to Southam road bridge. The tour ran from Paddington to Fenny Compton, then along the SMJ to Stratford-upon-Avon and on to Wellingborough via Leamington Spa, Rugby and Northampton.
