‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Final train passes Clifford Sidings 24th April 1965

4188 storms into the grade for the tough climb to Ettington with the final train. Clifford sidings have already been lifted but the scene looking towards Stratford which is now covered by roads and houses clearly shows the ministry grain store and the spire of Holy Trinity Church in the background. The weather had detiorated and the film used was Agfa CT18 which time has shown to be rather unstable on colour. The two scratches are unfortunate due to the camera I was using at the time but the image is now rather special none the less. If any photoshop wizard can improve this image please go ahead!
