‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Class 9F 2-10-0 No 92213 at Wormleighton crossing

Sweeping along the GW main line light engine with the SMJ marked by a row of trees behind is No 92213 on June 23 1966. Considering that Western Region steam had been extinguished at the end of 1965, there was plenty of activity. But all featured ex-WR 9Fs from Banbury shed, now part of the London Midland Region.This engine was less than six years old but was withdrawn in November 1966.The cow was not amused.
