‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

With the structure and plates removed, we surmised this was No 37 - but it was actually 37A. April 4 1966. It seems hard to believe that the SMJ was here first and the GC burrowed under it.

Excellent pictures on the "Transport Archive" of the bridge being built with the SMJ line in place.

Thanks for the correction Greg. I kinda realized something was wrong as the bridge was obviously built after the SMJ was complete, so could not have had a sequential number. I'll make a change.

Hi John,

This is bridge No. 37A.  Bridge 37 (Preston Road) was the underline bridge approx. 50 chains back towards Moreton Pinkney, that was removed at some point during 1965.

Cheers,

Greg
