‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. SMJ Walk - Day 2, Towcester - Cockley Brake Junction - Banbury Merton Street
This was our second (and longest walk) on a day that improved as we walked. It was one of the nicest days walking old railways we ever did, armed with our tape recorder and cameras. The line had been removed 12 years earlier, but there was lots to see. This is my favorite piece of the SMJ. It all seems a long time ago, especially from my home in California....If you wonder why I photographed lambs and village views, it was because I wanted capture my impression of the line - and I was a teenager. If only I had been able to do the same pictures before the track was removed. Anyway, it is what it is.
