‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways' 

Gone but not forgotten: "the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth"

SMJ Steam in the Sixties

This album contains 12 photos of steam-hauled freights working on the SMJ in January 1964 and February 1965. As you can see, the weather ranged from freezing fog to just freezing and overcast! In fact I have only included the poor-quality 1964 photos because they show a BR 5MT 4-6-0 which I believe was a fairly rare sight on the SMJ.
All the other photos were taken on a Saturday in February 1965 and although the locos were filthy and the weather grotty, they do give a reasonable picture of the latter day steam workings on the SMJ.
