‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Probably a question or an answer that is on here somewhere and I have missed it, but what was the line running speed? Always get the impression that the trains dawdled along rather than made any great progress.Continue

Thanks Ray

The paint scheme did look a little odd (hence my query), so its nice to get your follow-up comments. Even though the colours are a bit off, its still nice to see a photo of it, so many thanks for posting it on the site for others to see.

Following on I meant the black border looked original but he had obviously repainted letters in white !

I think I got this hawkseye nearly 30 years ago from someone who had been on one of the last railtours. The black surround and letters looked original but he had repainted the rest in non authentic beige colour .Assume they were all painted black and white towards the end but have seen a fenny compton apparently still in lms yellow. Sold it on a few years later unfortunately so don't know what happened to it. Just thought members might like to see it

Hi Ray

As a resident of Kineton, this photo is of particular interest. Did you repaint it, or was it already done when you got it? The reason I ask is because I'd love to know how close the background colour was to the original. On the current 'mock up' of the hawkseye we are displaying on our LWMRS model of Kineton, our cream background is not quite so pale as that shown in the photo. You say 'owned a long time ago', do you know where it is now?

Regards, Mark
