‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Electric train staff equipment had been brought into use between Blisworth and Towcester by 9 August 1910 (date of SMJR minute 451 (TNA file RAIL 674/3)) and presumably the new signal box at Blisworth appeared at the same time. In that this was so…Continue

Shall we bring this discussion under the proper heading! So far as the OS plan surveyed 1885, published 1886, is concerned: the OS liked - wherever they could  - to have text running parallel to the top and bottom borders. When they came to add the…Continue

Ladies & Gentlemen of the SMJ

The planned date for our second SMJ get together is nearly upon us and things seem to have gone quiet on the site. I hope that our second get together will be as successful, if not better than the first one - but I need some help.

Please can anyone who has SMJ memorabilia they can bring along please contact me. Remember, the get together is at Stoke Bruerne on the weekend of 11th and 12th of June and is part of the Stoke Bruerne Canal Gala weekend so as well as meeting and greeting with some of your fellow SMJ members, you can have a look round the canal gala too! If you haven't been, may I recommend it!

Please feel free to mention the event to any friends who have SMJ connections, if you have connections with a preserved steam line in the area please do what you can to raise the profile of our event and please generally – RAISE THE EVENTS PROFILE! Any thoughts welcome!

I intend to come up on the Friday like before to set up – if you want to meet and chat over a pint I’d love to see you!

Many thanks, as ever for your support

Looking forward to hearing all about the event - looks like you had a good time.

I paid a respectful nod to you all as I passed through Stratford station site on the way to the shops before heading to work.

So Andy, when will we get a proper museum display somewhere?

An interesting debate was had. Alwyn, John Jennings and I (and others) saying what about the legacy? John was saying how he had been 'let down' by a museum.

A good day - I have a few more images to sort out plus (hopefully) some audio.

Thanks for the nod!
