‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Stratford-upon-Avon Old Town station, 1983
On April 26 1983 I was in Stratford and made a short pilgrimage to see if anything was left of Old Town station. It was nearly 20 years since my previous visit. I was a bit surprised to find the platforms and other features still there, so you could clearly work out the layout of the site. For example, the telegraph pole stands on the eastbound platform where the buildings end almost opposite the water crane. The pole was there when the line was open.
