‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

SMJ photos
SMJ engine 43106 allocated to Woodford - by kind permission of Nic Burden
43106 was allocated to Woodford Halse from July 1956 to March 1962. During that time it appeared on the SMJ from time to time both on the 'Round the World' pickup and also on through freights. Stratford photographer T E Williams photographed it double heading a Woodford bound freight with 2F's WD 90563 at Stratford Old Town and the picture appeared in Sept 1960 Trains Illustrated. Nic photographed it at the SVR September 2012 Gala.
