‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. Great series of pix. It's interesting to see how it was done with the temporary 'bypass'. I didn't realise it had been done until I drove along there one day and thought, 'Hey, where's the bridge?' I had a feeling of deja vu when I drove through Charwelton about the same time. And also Culworth station bridge the other side of Moreton has gone I believe. No doubt others will follow sooner or later. They'd have a job to demolish Blakesley SMJ bridge as someone has built a bungalow virtually under it! I know that it was planned to demolish one of the 3 fine bridges on Eydon Road,Woodford ( the SMJ one) until the local parish council protested and offered to take some reponsibility for keeping it safe for visitors to the nature reserve underneath. Then Railtrack or Network Rail whichever it was at the time agreed to put in tie bars and repaired the parapet.
