‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

2E's finest! Did 'Hardwicke' ever run on the SMJ?

After many years of distinguished carreer on the WCML including a leading role in 'The Railway Races to the North', 'Hardwicke' among other 'Precedents' ended up shedded at Northampton, working locals from St John's station to Bedford and similar workings. At least two of its named sisters worked 'express services' on the SMJ during LMS days, taking over from the SMJ's own 2-4-0 on such workings. The LMS wanted to rid itself of non standard types. There must be a good chance that 'Hardwicke' appeared at least once on such workings, but we shall never know.
