‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Passenger Trains connected to the SMJ

Following on from the previous discussion about WD passenger trains on the SMJ during the 1940s; it must be said that passenger trains ran on metals connected to the SMJ until the mid 1960s. There was a passenger service from the nearest point to…Continue

Dave, deep breath ...and relax!! We missed you of course, but it matters not! Loads of members came by and said hello, A/S brought along some great stuff, we had other people show, Evan Dines daughter came by so worry not!
We are to do it again, and anyway, I must take you up on that offer to come over to Rushden somewhen.

Chill!!

It was great to meet Ray, Gary and all those other members of the Unofficial SMJR Society who I had only corresponded with by emails before. Alwyn brought a fantastic collection of artefacts for us to see. Jim Hand provided us with great first hand accounts of lodging trips from Bedford to Gloucester via the SMJ as well as accounts of eventful trips on the Midland main line and the Bedford - Bletchley line brick trains. Clive Boardman and his wife came all the way from Wiltshire and I am sure was pleased to see the many artefacts that Alwyn had brought from Clive's old base at Woodford. Other people I had the chance to speak to included Evan Dines' (Towcester stationmaster) daughter and an elderly gentleman whose name I didn't find out who told about trainspotting at Blisworth around the late 30s and early 40s who remembered the blue and red streamlined Pacific hauled trains as well as the more mundane little trains on our line. Grateful thanks to Andy for organising the Get Together and especial thanks and congratulations on an excellent Canal Festival ( I especially enjoyed seeing the working narrow boats!) to David Blagrove for arranging the use of the room.

Megga Megga Cock Up!
Knew the event coincided with a running day at Rushden and had prepared for it, made lists of items to bring , but I was prepared for the comimg weekend. What a b---s -p. I feel so sad that I have missed out and more especially that I have let others down as I have much to contribute. I hope you will do this again and if you do please treat me as a complete donkey and E constantly. I have had an extremely hectic two months, all railway oriented so please forgive me. The memorabillia pictured on the site looks great the social intercourse would no doubt have crowned the event, my best wishes and sincere apologies IDIOT CHAMBERS

What a great success, even the sun shone! The first ever SMJ society get together at Stoke Bruerne and the Canal weekend went off without a hitch and was deemed by all as a great day. Thanks to all those who popped by and said hello. Thanks to David Blagrove for the use of a venue for the day, his support and help, thanks to all those who came by to make themselves known and a very, very big thank you to A/S for all the great memorabilia he brought.

The word is, we must do that again next year!
