‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Blisworth - Towcester ETS working

Electric train staff equipment had been brought into use between Blisworth and Towcester by 9 August 1910 (date of SMJR minute 451 (TNA file RAIL 674/3)) and presumably the new signal box at Blisworth appeared at the same time. In that this was so…Continue

Shall we bring this discussion under the proper heading! So far as the OS plan surveyed 1885, published 1886, is concerned: the OS liked - wherever they could  - to have text running parallel to the top and bottom borders. When they came to add the…Continue

I have read recently heard the (valid) point that things are getting lost, fragmented on the website. I would love some feed-back from you as to the direction of may-be a better navigation system for this lost stuff to be found or any other ideas you might have.

Please remember the site is hosted on a third-party platform from www.ning.com and I do have to work within the constraints of that.

Some suggestions would be great and I could see if they could be implemented. A thought I had is albums for images. When uploading images can you put them in an album where they can be kept together. I could go through the images I put up and put those into relevant albums

I've been through pix under my name adding tags if necessary. One problem is that when this new site was set up because you had to move 100 of pix in a short space of time some of my pix are now under your name so that its now impossible for me to edit them. This must have happened to Gary's and other people's 'pre- new site pix' as well. It was a necessary thing to do but it makes a lot of work for you Andy now if they need tagging. What I've tried to do is add comments to them to explain what they are about. Perhaps if other people who provided pix for the old website could check out their accidentally recredited 'old site pix' and if necessary add comments it will make some locations, etc. clearer and save Andy some work although of course you will not be able to tag them. Strangely any tags that I put on before they were moved have remained so that makes life a bit easier for you, Andy.

Another problem with tagging is knowing what to put, I think the best thing is to put as many tags as possible as everyone has different ideas. One word tags are best because it you tag a pic 'City of Truro' for instance it will split that into 3 separate tags! Location is important ( eg Towcester) and with steam locomotives: wheel formation, class, CME and former railway company (so LMS Stanier 8F 2-8-0) would provide 4 separate useful tags. For vintage steam day pix the decade (ie 50s, 60s) would make it easier to locate them amongst the many recent pix of the SMJ route.

I am not sure if it is happening on here too but I sometimes find that when loading pictures on the railtube network the bulk loader doesn't always complete properly and I have to add tags individully to each photo which sometimes can be overlooked. When it does work I can add tags to all in one hit which is easier.
Just a thought as to why the tags don't always get put on,
