‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

The area is swarming with archeologists. So far they have located 2 wells, an old roadway from the Easton Estate to the A43 near the Porsche garage and other Roman artefacts.

I was there last week and the new building should not affect what little is left of the SMJ in the Towcester area. I did photograph the Tiffield Road bridge which clings to life in a damaged state. Eventually much of the land between Towcester and the M1 will be warehouses.
