‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

I moved to Byfield when I was seven. I used to love running and would use the old railway as a circuit by getting on the railway at The Twistle, running through to the old railway station site, cutting through to the what was The Recreation Playing Fields adjacent the Church and back home.
The track got worse and worse as the years went by due to being very overgrown and all the bridges being filled in, almost impassable by the time I left Byfield in 1979.
Station site now unrecognisable, Church Road bridge taken down, no track available to Woodford and the area no longer recognised as it was when I was a child.
