‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Towcester Ironstone Quarry
You can see here in the evening sun on June 23 1966 that we are facing west along the SMJ about a mile from Towcester on the Olney line. To the right is the junction for Towcester Ironstone Quarry. This had closed around 1916 and was prone to derailments due to its sharp curves (Riley and Simpson,1999, p83). The SMJ curves left at this point.
