‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Quinton 19_10_58

This is looking towards the M1 at Quinton Green on October 19th 1958. Actually there is no M1 there yet - just the two bridges that have been formed in concrete and are awaiting the embankment of the motorway to arrive from either end. The larger, left hand, bridge is over the SMJ and the other is an occupation bridge. A string of wagons is parked on the line.
