‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Shall we bring this discussion under the proper heading! So far as the OS plan surveyed 1885, published 1886, is concerned: the OS liked - wherever they could  - to have text running parallel to the top and bottom borders. When they came to add the…Continue

Does any one know where I could locate a scale drawing of the SMJ 2-4-0 tender loco No 13? I have looked in all of the usual places that I can think of, but with no success, and I don't think that one has appeared in the model railway press. Even a drawing of the Hull & Barnsley Beyer Peacock 2-4-0 would do as I believe the SMJ loco was to the same works drawing .
Whilst on the subject, perhaps we should start a list of the known scale drawings of the SMJ as a resource - I can start with the following
Locos
Swindon Marlborough & Andover 2-4-0 (later MSWJR) -two of these became SMJ 5 & 6 when the SMAR defaulted - Model Rly News June 1966
Manning Wardle 0-6-0ST EWJR / SMJ No 1 - Model Ry News September 1970
Lancashire & Yorkshire 2-4-0T as with a crane later fitted - was EWJR No4 of 1873 but returned to makers and later sold to L & Y - Model Rly Constructor June 1960
LNW DX goods 0-6-0 in original condition became EWJR/SMJ 7,8,&9 - in Locomotives worth modelling by F C Hambleton (book)
LBSCR Class C goods 0-6-0 - became SMJ 7 - also in Locomotives worth modelling -as above

Good stock
SMJ 10 ton low side wagon and 8 ton piped van - Model rly News August 1961
There are also 8 SMJ wagons and coach drawings listed by the Historical Model Ry Society on their website - 5 plank, 4 plank, 4 wheel coach, tool van, horse box, loco coal , saloon brake and six wheel compo - but these are quite expensive so you have to really want one !

BUILDINGS etc
Ettington station / goods shed / signalbox - Model Ry News January 1964
Binton station buildings - Model railways May 1979
Blakesley station buildings - Railway Modeller March 1968

Anyone know of any more ?

For members' information there is a line drawing/weight diagram of the Beyer Peacock 2-4-0s as supplied to the Hull & Barnsley Railway in 1885 in the volume on Hull & Barnsley Locomotives published by the HMRS some years ago. This is the same design as supplied to the SMJ, although the cab on the SMJ loco is larger than that supplied to the H & BR locos. I have passed my copy to Barry - if anyone else wants to see it let me know.

The Manning, Wardle (later Morous on Colonel Stephen's lines) was covered in great detail by Don Townsley in Model Railway Journal issue 12. Don used to be a draughtsman for Hunslet, who took over the goodwill of Manning Wardle's business, and he was (I think) latterly their archivist with access to all the records and drawings.

Several years ago I made an attempt to start a Historical Society for the SMJR, but didn't get very far, and am still awaiting articles promised from 10 years ago. If a Society can be started off properly, then I still have permission from both Don and Wild Swan (who publish MRJ) to reproduce the drawing in a Society journal: we were going to call it "Regularity", after Stratford's telegraphic address.

It used to be possible to buy drawings and works photographs from Beyer, Peacock. I have some, but over the years their availability has been somewhat reduced: I know that a drawing of number 2 was once available, but when I bought my drawings about 10 years ago, they did not have it listed.
