‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Last week, as part of the research for my book, I had the enjoyable experience of an evening at the Warley Model Railway Club, looking at their 53-foot model of Broom Junction station. It really is an amazing creation. Have a look at their website, www.warley-mrc.org.uk. The S&MJR seems to attract model-makers. Harry Cowan at Stratford is creating a model of the Stratford SMJ station in an upstairs room of his house. Also, of course, a full-size replica of the main Broom station building has been built at the Midland Railway Centre at Butterley.
