‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

An improbable, funny, but absolutely true story relating to the Kineton military railway.Long after my Army days I still retained an affection and passing interest in Kineton ammunition depot where I served during the 1960s. Coupled to a 'love' of…Continue

Electric train staff equipment had been brought into use between Blisworth and Towcester by 9 August 1910 (date of SMJR minute 451 (TNA file RAIL 674/3)) and presumably the new signal box at Blisworth appeared at the same time. In that this was so…Continue

Situated at the back of Coulthard Close, at the far end of the park is a fence and gate which once was the line of the former Olney Branch. The gate seems original, there is reference to a foot crossing some 37 chains from Towcester station. I think this might be it.

this is the gate me and my good friends Luke and Jim, retrived from the bush on 29th july 2009. if you look carefully at the right of the photo you can see where the gate used to be wedged ito the bush, we cut it back with a hedge trimmer and pulled it out. but in the hard winter of 2009-2010 the gate was damaged by frost, ice and snow and we could no-longer service it which it why it is not functioning. we also had a problem with vandals in may 2010 but these were caught and served their punishment for criminal damage to a listed piece of heritage. Its an honnour to see pictures of the gate online on this dedicated website. Good job!
