‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Ex-Midland Railway 3F 0-6-0 No 43222 passes Broom North Signal Box with a SLS Railtour on 29th April 1956. The Stephenson Locomotive Society Railtour commenced at Kings Cross and proceeded to Hertford, Hitchin, Bedford, 0lney, Towcester, Stratford, Broom, Redditch, New Street to return to Euston via Coventry, Leamington, Rugby. The locomotive has just completed the Stratford upon Avon to Broom section of the former SMJ line and is now heading towards New Street via Barnt Green. Built as Midland Railway No 3222 by Derby works in 1890, the locomotive was allocated No 43222 in July 1949 which it retained until June 1959 when it was withdrawn from 41B Sheffield Grimesthorpe shed to be scrapped.
