‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

"I discovered the S.M.J. by accident whilst investigating some of the ironstone lines still operating in that area in the early to mid-sixties. Together with a group of friends I used to go out to Northamptonshire and the surrounding areas looking for steam on the ironstone lines and the Great Central, and discovered the S.M.J. in the process!

It was clear that a line like that could not last for much longer, so we tried to get as many pictures of it as possible while we still could. Even though we knew that the end was inevitable, it was still sad when it came. I paid a last visit in July, 1965 after final closure had taken place and the sight of the half demolished signal box at Towcester has haunted me ever since".
