‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Last Rites026

Here I am feeling all chuffed because I have received a copy of my book titled 'Last Rites.' It tells the story of the destruction of Britain's steam railways and includes plenty of SMJ photos and a description of walking the whole railway 50 years ago, during which time I got arrested. Honest!!. It has 200 pictures, many from the Northampton area and includes ironstone lines. Available from Amazon and The Model Shop, Northampton.

Hi John, Just got my copy of your book off Amazon.  Thoroughly enjoying it especially around the area of Woodford Halse and the GCR, an area I am very familiar with.
A great set of photographs that accompany the book as well.

Thank you for the `Last Rites` mention.  I have just ordered it online for my husband`s birthday.

He will be chuffed.  He is currently working on what was the SMJ (Broom junction/Stratford section) planting suitable hedging/trees for wildlife.
