‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Blisworth - Towcester ETS working

Electric train staff equipment had been brought into use between Blisworth and Towcester by 9 August 1910 (date of SMJR minute 451 (TNA file RAIL 674/3)) and presumably the new signal box at Blisworth appeared at the same time. In that this was so…Continue

Whow final proof, where did you find it? The view is looking towards Towcester from a point roughly at the present A43 / A5 roundabout. The road to the right was the old road to Greens Norton, now its the access road to the Tidy Tip. greens norton is now accessed from the roundabout. Tthe bill boards opposite for a long time carried the famous Keep Death Off the Road 'Black Widow' road safety poster. Seeing that lorry thundering under bridge, probably in those days with inadequate braking on what looks like a very wet road, reminds me exactly how dangerous this road junction was. Just behind the photographer on the A5 was a blind summit which added to the danger. Travelling on the Friday bus from Blakesley to Towcester Cinema my stomach used to churn as we pulled slowly out at this virtually blind spot with the 'Black Widow' staring down at our little Bedford 29 seater. the access road to the station is on the far right, with further statio area access via the Tiffield Road just beyond the bridge in its present location.
