‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Hi Peter,
Really enjoying the pictures you have. Thanks for taking time to post them for people like me who were unable to experience the line until some 20 years after closure.
I think most of the line was rather optimistically constructed to take a second line. There are many photos of over bridges and such with an empty trackbed span.

The date of this is Aug 15 1963. The station buildings were demolished by then. The road bridge in the background (road to Slapton) appears to be optimistically constructed for double track, or at least a passing loop.
