‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

I have just signed up for the above course, which is concerned with the GCR.  I wondered if anyone might be interested.  There are still quite a few places available.  I have cut and pasted the details below:

Details: Wednesdays 2.30pm to 4.30pm 8 meetings from 24/03/2010

Venue: York House Centre, London Rd., Stony Stratford Fee: £54.50

This is the Great Central Line, of which some segments still exist, which was the last mainline to London through Northamptonshire and
Buckinghamshire. Martin will discuss its planning, financing,
building and running, and the Day School listed below should go
nicely with the course. However, they are separate, book either or
both, as you wish.

Anyone interested should phone the organiser:

Roy Chapman

Tel: 01908 568921

There is also a day course at Quainton that fits in with it.
