‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Salcey Forest Station Site

The station site at Salcey has always been of fascination to me for an age. I think I’ve been there, well very close by… now I’m not sure prior to hijacking a thread by Alan, I am re-opening the conversation here on a new one.

Found this watercolour of Salcey forest station. Could perhaps help in the location.

Seems to show the location much nearer to the Northampton Newport Pagnall rd than to Piddington. See the road bridge in the painting.

First of all that's a great picture Stephen, where did you come across that?

I visited the station site in March 2011, the platform is clearly evident. I also have a copy of an old OS map showing the station - the only map I've ever seen that actually shows it as an open station.

I don't own the painting unfortunately. I just did a google image search and found it there. I've ordered myself some old OS maps hoping one shows the station.

I think the station site is just to the left of the gap in the hedge, there definitely trees growing on the platform. I'm pretty sure the station wasn't so near to the road as the watercolour shows.

Incidently, it looks like the picture belongs to our very own John Evans, he also has a watercolour of Towcester station.

Okay. Thats good to know.The section immediately to the left of the gap is a lighter green colour. Perhaps that whole section was the Station building and platform area now covered by younger vegetation?

I must go along soon and have a good look.

I've visited the Salcey Forest site both in April 2009 and April 2012, as I have family living in Piddington. The gap in the hedges marked X is about 25 yards east of the platform. I also have photos of my findings which I will also update in April this year, where i'll be doing my walk along the entire SMJ between Showsley and Salcey Forest, although some sections of my walk are 'boarderline illegal' !!! I have successfully walked the length before, and i'll be posting photos from my walk this year! I'll be posting my 2012 photos to the website shortly, either today or tomorrow.

Hi Richard,

This section is the only main part the "Tourists" did not manage to walk but I hope to complete it this year.

Do you think that 4 people could walk it without getting into too much trouble?

The location of the station appears to be exactly where I surmised it was years ago. I have only just managed to get on a PC to join in the conversation as not so easy on my phone.
