‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

The loco is 'Amos' it was a 4 wheeled petrol electric loco built in 1928. it was a Clay Cross loco, it had formerly been at The Ashover Light Railway. The loco worked at Bloxham Iron stone quarries from 1947. When the pits closed in May 1954 the loco was bought by W Bush And Sons of Alfreton, it was converted to a diesel drive. It was sent by road  to Helmdon to assist with the dismantling of the SMJR - Towcester Cockley Brake line.

Amos was a rebuild of a 60cm gauge machine built by Nasmyth and Wilson for the war dept around 1918. Clay Cross purchased a few of these machines.

Bloxham quarries were previously owned by James Paine who also owned Byfield quarries.

The loco looks to have been owned by 'The Clay Cross Co. Ltd.' and the two wagons appear to be single bolsters with the bolsters removed. The brickwork and roof of Helmdon Station building look to be in very good condition, unlike the platform.

The N&BJR was an earlier casualty of the axe, and I imagine the management simply wanted to get rid of things. A dozen years later, and the railways were far more geared up for this, and the scale of the operation made it worth their while.

Thanks Simon, that's interesting.  Strange though that BR didn't use their own staff / loco to do the work as they did with the rest of the system. Most of the SMJ was taken up with trains headed by Woodford 8Fs although Northampton engines took up the Olney branch.

It's an ex War Dept 600mm gauge Kerr, Stuart from WWI, which has been regauged (looks like new axles were fitted with the wheels outside) and some crude buffers added.

It must be an industrial loco, none of the departmental BR locos resembled it.  Any ideas anyone?
