‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Did this railway (as opposed to the East & West Junction Railway) go into receivership - if so, when. And when did it come out of receivership?Continue

Shall we bring this discussion under the proper heading! So far as the OS plan surveyed 1885, published 1886, is concerned: the OS liked - wherever they could  - to have text running parallel to the top and bottom borders. When they came to add the…Continue

Are we calling it bridge 12 or 11? My notes say 12?

This map shows how skew bridge 11 was!

Just putting on another bridge photo - again a poor one, but I guess probably quite rare - I don't know of another shot taken here. This is the bridge on the Towcester - Ravenstone line over the A43 near Tiffield, looking towards Northampton.
I've also added a shot taken in the 1980's from the embankment end, when the road was only a single carriageway (although much wider than in the old shot !)

Has anyone got a 2009 version of this image so as I can make a now and then? I have this shot to link to the old one. Andy

Are we saying this is looking into town, ie station approach would be first left, Tiffield road would be second left (under bridge) and the Blakesley road is on the right?

No, I was wrong with Ferodo it was always Lucas, as I now recall. I was brought up next door to a garage where there were lots of adverts for car related products and also spent lots of time at Silverstone where there were even more large similar adverts including ones on bridges, hence the confusion. If you look closely you can see large bill hoarding by the Norton Road and I think there were also others on the Towcester side next to the Tiffield Road.

Hii Dick
Got it about 20 years ago from the Northants County Council - it's taken from a poor photocopy from their Highways Dept, hence the poor quality of my scan . I'm not sure whether there was a different advert on the other side - so some of the other suggestions (Ferodo etc) might well be correct, and of course they may have changed from time to time. I've always been surprised that more photos of this don't crop up - I've got a few Towcester Local History Society booklets, but there are none in those. Suppose it was just a bit too far out of the town centre?

Correction - station access on FAR LEFT! Ditto Tiffield Road
