‘The Stratford Upon Avon & Midland Junction Railway’ (or S.M.J.) was a small independent railway company which ran a line across the empty, untouched centre of England. It visited the counties of Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and a little of Buckinghamshire, only existing as the SMJ from 1909 to 1923. In 1923 the S.M.J.became a minor arm of the London Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.), then in 1948 'British Railways'

Blisworth - Towcester ETS working

Electric train staff equipment had been brought into use between Blisworth and Towcester by 9 August 1910 (date of SMJR minute 451 (TNA file RAIL 674/3)) and presumably the new signal box at Blisworth appeared at the same time. In that this was so…Continue

Shall we bring this discussion under the proper heading! So far as the OS plan surveyed 1885, published 1886, is concerned: the OS liked - wherever they could  - to have text running parallel to the top and bottom borders. When they came to add the…Continue

OK John. We look forward to seeing the images. My brother lives in Towcester, that's my only connection!

I have a place in Yorkshire, but my daughter lives in Towcester. I often stay with her. Not that close to Devon, but better than Pasadena! I should get over to the UK early next year so I'll get all my SMJ stuff together and bring it over here. I've added quite a few railway pictures (not SMJ) on my flickr site (www.flickr.com/photos/the-evanses) and I am about to put a few Barry scrapyard pictures up.

I can't do higher res as I have a poor quality scanner. What other bits do you want, the SMJ is shown from near Eydon eastwards to bothe Ravenstone and Blissie. The N&B to a point just short of Cockley Brake?

Found this 1950 major revision, updated 1961, OS 1'' of the Blisworth area, which shows where the ironstone line was in 1950. No sign of bridges 1A or 2 by this time, just 3 can be seen. I think the working was extended later on nearer to the old A43, I can remember coming up the hill towards Rectory Farm in the 60s and seeing the top of jib of a giant digger showing above a low hillside just north of this road.

I'm just writing a short piece now Dick. I'll put it up to be knocked down - but at least we may get to the bottom of it that way!
